Liberal Democrat Policy
The Liberal Democrats have a long history of helping people in the UK.
At local government level, we have just over 3000 councillors across the United Kingdom and we control 67 councils.
Quite simply, we believe that you should be able to do as you wish - as long as it doesn't harm another member of society. The preamble to our constitution puts our values succinctly: The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.
When in government, we introduced the Pupil Premium grant, we introduced same-sex marriage and shared parental leave, we were ranked 6th in the world for climate change progress and we created the Green Investment Bank.
More recently, we have led campaigns resulting in the banning of revenge porn, the criminalisation of up-skirting, the repeal of the Vagrancy Act and the implementation of the Carer's Leave Act and the Worker Protection Act.

Why not Labour in Chester South and Eddisbury?
Labour came second in Eddisbury in the last General Election. BUT four heavily Labour voting wards in Winsford have been removed from the new constituency and replaced with Tory-facing wards. The Lib Dems came second here in more seats than any other party in the 2023 local elections.
Don't forget - our next door neighbours are North Shropshire, with a sitting Lib Dem MP who took over from a Conservative.
- Since December 2019, 13 Labour MPs have quit or been disciplined over claims of bad behaviour, including racism and sexual misconduct, including Chester's former MP Chris Matheson.
- Keir Starmer has made screeching U-turns on no less than 20 key policy areas since 2019, including the Green New Deal.
- Locally, Labour-run Cheshire East looks set to go bankrupt. Cheshire West Labour have presided over a £47 million black hole in the Council budget. Nationally, Labour councils are going bankrupt after being run for years by Labour in Croydon,
Slough, Birmingham and Nottingham (twice in two years). - Within four months of the recent local elections, two Cheshire West Labour councillors quit the party.
Why not the Conservatives in Chester South and Eddisbury?
- Since December 2019, 17 Tory MPs have quit or been disciplined by the Conservatives over claims of bad behaviour, including sexual misconduct, bullying and lobbying.
- Partygate and lies to the Commons. Both Sunak and Johnson were fined.
- In the past eight years, we have had a revolving door of 5 Prime Ministers, 8 Chancellors and 12 housing ministers.
- The Conservatives have consistently voted to pump sewage into the Dee and the Weaver and failed to hold the water companies to account.
- Rishi Sunak scrapped HS2 and spent the money on pot holes in London, leaving Crewe out in the cold. There is no levelling up here.
- When the Lib Dems left government in 2015, the UK was ranked 6th in the world in the Climate Change Performance Index. It is now ranked 20th.
- Truss & Kwarteng's mini-budget cost the UK economy £30 billion according to the Resolution Foundation. At £1 per minute, it will take us until 2080 to pay back.
